My Journey into UX Design
I've been a designer for over eleven years and my journey to UX Design isn't a straightforward one. I started working on UI in Expotrade in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I managed all their event websites in the Middle East. After moving to Canada, I joined Uberflip learning about how to target outcomes on our marketing launches, event mobile app, and event experience. Eventually I focused more on data visualization, and got myself an associates degree for UX while working with ioAirFlow. I then began my independent design consultancy job as I gained more experience.
Currently, I work for Checkfront, a company based in Victoria. I'm a Senior Product Designer helping Checkfront build a better booking experience catering to almost 15,000 businesses who want to give their own customers an experience to remember. For my consultancy work, former colleagues and contacts reach out to me for work. I've worked with companies mostly within the North America region. Since I have more than eleven years of design experience, I'm well versed in a multitude of disciplines. I have recently incorporated generative AI as part of my skills, since it speeds up my design process. But as part of my work, I do a lot of user research, prototyping, workshop facilitation, accessibility compliance, data visualization, illustration, writing content, print. Occasionally, I brush up on my skills on packaging, and event design. |
UX Design and Product Design
UX Strategy and Initiatives
Part of the work of a UX professional is to educate and scale the UX process. While most of these initiatives were executed during Checkfront, I also help companies that consult with me with their UX maturity.

Repackaging CheckfrontCheckfront is an all in one booking software application for people who want to sell experiences online. The company has not changed their plans and pricing for over 6 years and wanted to launch a free plan to ensure revenue and customer growth. This was a company wide project involving multiple departments. The project timeline was four months.

Illustration
My ability to draw and illustrate has significantly enhanced my UX design process. User Experience is part storytelling, and what can convey stories better than having an image or a sketch.
For illustrating, I use various mediums. I’m good at digital art, both vector and raster, as well as traditional mixed-media. I've also begun using generative AI art to speed up ideation like Midjourney. My work has been used for event backdrops, prints, covers, packaging, merchandise, and digital advertisements for the companies I’ve worked with. Print and Production
Fresh out of college, I dove into the world of website and package design. In Al Najmah Stationery, I often coordinated with our suppliers across China, Russia, and India. It was an exhilarating time, since it still feels me with joy to see my work in physical form being used across the world by children. I created a lot of educational material in English and Arabic.
My passion for events, kindled in college, led me to pivot to event design and I joined an events company called Expotrade which is based in Australia. I was lucky enough to be selected as a designer there and found myself working with big companies like IBM, and the different government bodies in UAE. That’s where I honed my print design skills. To this day, I’ve spearheaded the creative direction for over 30 events spanning Asia, the Middle East, and North America. The events industry taught me to meet tight deadlines, since nothing beats planning ahead. Technology’s role in enhancing our experiences fascinates me. In regions like the Middle East and Canada, we’ve replaced traditional business cards with QR codes on lanyards, streamlining networking. Personalized giveaways, activities, and planning meals, creating mobile apps, and branding also play a crucial role in attendee satisfaction. I felt fortunate to have networked with a few of the people attending such big C level events, since these people are at the top of the companies they represent. They bring with them such interesting stories and it makes me realize that despite all the titles we carry, at the end of the day, we're all just human. These insights have been invaluable in my present role. Category Visual Design, Event Production, UI, Packaging, Illustration, Branding |
